Union Chapel Announcement
Union Chapel of Oak Bluffs, MA launched a matching fund challenge in late December 2020 to support the food equity programs of the Island Food Pantry and Island Grown Initiative (IGI). Last summer, Union Chapel donated an initial $5,000 to the Pantry and its members were thrilled that these funds went right to work. So much so that they gave a second $5,000 gift for the matching fund challenge. This gift was subsequently matched by an anonymous grant and two individual donors.
The Island Food Pantry, which formally merged with IGI on January 1, will develop a “food equity hub” to support food distribution activities currently sponsored by more than a dozen Island groups. These activities are designed to expand access to healthy, affordable food throughout Martha’s Vineyard. The Pantry alone distributed more than 300,000 meals to over 3,300 Islanders in 2020.
The unique collaboration among IGI, the Island Food Pantry, and Union Chapel may extend to other forms of support in 2021, including a Day of Service during the summer months focused on food equity.
